Trouble with 1018 installation on OS X

I just bought a macbook and I have an HP Deskjet 1018. I tried following the installation guide but as I'm new with mac os x and have no knowledge of UNIX, it didn't make any sense to me at first and only as I did more research did I manage to work my way thorugh it, but even then I'm not sure if I did it right. And if I did, i got stuck on the last part, where I have to compile and install the foo2zjs software. How do I do that?

Actually, can someone post a step-by-step guide for n00bs like myself, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease? And please mention that there is such a thing as terminal and that the command lines are supposed to be typed in there (aaaah, reminds me of the good ol' MS-DOS days :)-D Thanks!

Oh, MAC OS X 10.4.9.

The INSTALL.osx starts with instructions that are pretty clear. Have you tried following them? Where did you get lost?

Hi all,

I'm sharing the same problem as the OP, but instead i'm running leopard, 10.5.6 and I'm very new at this. I'm apologize in advance for the noob questions.

I'm stuck at Step 4 of the Install.osx.

I've downloaded and unpacked into a foomatic-filters-3.0.2 folder and see the mentioned (foomatic-RIP and foomatic-gswrapper) files, I think. There are 2 files that are slightly similar foomatic-gswrapper.1.in and foomtic-gswrapper.in and also foomatic-rip.1.in and foomatic-rip.in.

Question 1) are these the right files I'm told to Install?

I click on them to install and have to choose a program to run with. I dont' have anything defaulted, so I choose the xCode program that I just downloaded. It opens to something that looks right, but not sure what to do after this. Im really not familiar with xCode and the "Run" is grey'd out and dont' see any other options.

Question 2) Am I using the right program to open these files with?

Question 3) Aassuming that somebody has answered Questions 1 and 2, The last part of Step 4
$ tar zxvf foomatic-filters-3.0.2.tar.gz
$ cd foomatic-filters-3.0.2
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr
$ make
$ sudo make install

will run with Terminal?

Thanks for the help. This has been extremely frustrating and any help would be much appreciated.

thanks for the response. I put the first $ in the terminal and this is the output:

tar (child): foomatic-filters-3.0.2.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

My downloaded zip and unpacked is on my desktop. Does it need to be in another location for it to find such a file?
