getweb by now is downloading a non-working firmware for 1018.
it is downloading this one:
sihp1018.img, 129092 bytes, md5 bbe1b12501f502b2950cf89624d2c838
# file sihp1018.img
sihp1018.img: data
but this one is simply ignored.

While downloading from
as seen in a comment here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hplip/+bug/329898
sihp1018.dl, 129143 bytes, md5 052c34845bb5a5b65a8e5bf12397e6ff
# file sihp1018.dl
sihp1018.dl: PJL encapsulated PostScript document text

Sounds like the first one is missing the PJL encapsulation (checked via vimdiff).

From the "make install" output:
# foo2zjs Firmware files (if any)
install -oroot -glp -m 775 -d /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/
for i in sihp1*.img; do \
    if [ -f $i ]; then \
        base=`basename $i .img`; \
        ./arm2hpdl $i >$base.dl; \
        install -c -m 644 $base.dl /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/; \
    fi; \

arm2hpdl puts the PJL header on the ".dl" file. Not a problem.
