Problem printing with 1018 with Ubuntu 9.10 OS [USB problem]
Posted by: iconit ()
Date: December 02, 2009 01:40AM

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 7.04 to 9.04 via DVD that came with a book written by Keir Thomas. During the install my HP Laser Jet 1018 printer was detected automatically and a print driver was installed successfully, or so I thought since a test page printed just fine. Following this I upgraded to 9.10. Tonite I discovered my printer will not work so I went out on the internet and found help on the Ubuntu Wiki page. I followed the instructions twice to download, uninstall and install the foo2zjs.tar.gz package and I still get nothing. What can I do???

Did you read the INSTALL file?

CUPS USB NOTES
--------------
    If you are using the USB port, then the URI should be:
        usb:/dev/usb/lp0
        usb:/dev/usb/lp1
    OR
        usb://Samsung/CLP-310%20Series
        usb://Samsung/CLP-310%20Series
        usb://HP/Color%20LaserJet%20CP1215
        usb://HP/Color%20LaserJet%202600n
        usb://HP/LaserJet%201000
        usb://HP/LaserJet%201005
        usb://HP/LaserJet%201018
        usb://HP/LaserJet%201020
        usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1005
        usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1006
        usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1505

    Don't use hp://<whatever> because that is for hplip (a closed source,
    proprietary driver).

Better yet, get rid of it altogether.
$ sudu apt-get remove hplip

Then, reboot.

Yes, I read and followed (I thought) the INSTALL file.

The URI, I entered it in the GUI that system-config-printer presented as usb://HP/LaserJet%201018 AND I ran the $ sudo apt-get remove hplip. I still have no printer. This was the fix to my printing problems when I was running 6.10 and I don't want to go back, I would like to make this work. I really like 9.10 except for my printer.

I will try changing the URI to usb:/dev/usb/lp0 or 1, rebooting and see if it works. Wish me luck. I am an old DOS guy and I want to make this work.

I just rebooted my system and still no printer. I went to the System>Administration>Printing applet and noticed that the "Printer State: Stopped - Backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp does not exist!" message is being reported. I take it that I missed something, what??

"/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp does not exist"

You are still using hp:<whatever>. Delete the printer and start over.

Ok, I deleted the printer and started over TWICE. I did the following both times;

$ sudo apt-get install build-essential (got a message that said the latest version was already there)
$ sudo apt-get install foomatic-filters (got a message that said the latest version was already there)
$ wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz (looks like the file came in)
$ tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz (unpacked it fine)
$ cd foo2zjs
$ sudo make uninstall (no error messages)
$ make (no error messages)
$ ./getweb 1018 (some *.img file came in)
$ sudo make install install-hotplug cups (no error messages)
$ sudo make install (no error messages)
$ sudo make cups (no error messages)
$ sudo system-config-printer (GUI displays and I add a new printer)

In the URI I added
usb://HP/LaserJet%201018

After selecting HP and LaserJet 1018 I Apply the changes and request a test page when prompted. After about 20 seconds I get a message that the printer must not be connected. I have swapped the printer with other USB devices (external HD & a USB Mouse) and still nothing. Have you ever seen anything so stubburn??? The best part about tonite was the fact that the DUCKS WON the Civil War game!! GO DUCKS!!

Any ideas from here?

$ ls -l  /dev/usb

$ sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0

What does that say???

No Such File or Directory to both. I am willing to try almost anything or will I need to get a new printer to work with 9.10? I like the printer and I don't want to go back to 7.04.

What next?

HP 1018 & Ubuntu 9.10

I am still not able to print from Ubuntu 9.10. I installed a new HD and installed 9.04 and it detected my HP LaserJet 1018 just fine and printed a test page. Then I upgraded to 9.10 and now no printer. I downloaded foo2zjs and followed the install instructions, I have tried this multiple times with the same result, no printing.

This printer worked very well with this same driver (foo2zjs) for most of 2 years with 6.10 & 7.04.

Can anyone help me?

Works good on Ubuntu 9.10 with all updates applied.

I don't understand the output of the dmseg command. I get about 100 lines or more of information. Looking thru it I find 5 lines that show

...snip...
[ 0.948146] usb usb1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 31.588087] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110

[ 67.372122] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -110
[ 72.704057] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -110

[ 83.072057] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
[ 83.206240] usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

I don't find the bi-directional info that yours displays.

Then the lsmod | grep usblp returns nothing and the
sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 returns "No such file or directory: 'can't open /dev/usb/lp0'

What can I do from here?

$ sudo modprobe usblp
$ lsmod | grep usblp

What does that say?

But, I would say that you have a USB problem (error -110).

Put it on a different USB controller or change the cables or put it on a *POWERED* hub.

$ sudo modprobe usblp gives no response, I am asked for my password and then I get a new line with the command prompt - brad@brad-desktop:~$

$ lsmod | grep usblp gives the following
usblp 12636 0

I have 4 usb ports off the board, all powered and 2 in the front of the box not powered. Of the 4 ports off the board I am running an external HD for backup purposes, a mouse and this printer. Under 6.10 & 7.04 this printer worked fine AFTER I purchased, downloaded and installed the f002zjs driver. I originally thot it was a usb problem too so I did switch the mouse with the printer and got no printing and switched the printer with the HD and still no printer. With each switch I followed the Install instructions.

I still have the old HDs with 7.04 and the printer will still work with them. Is the problem with "sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 returns "No such file or directory: 'can't open /dev/usb/lp0'"?

Any ideas??
