Missing dependency operator [FreeBSD - did not read the instructions]

I can't wait to learn what stupid mistake I made to cause this...

FreeBSD 6.3-stable, gnome2

Followed foo2zjs download and install instructions carefully. After unpacking and cd to foo2zjs directory, $ make command rolls out a series of complaints reading: "Makefile", line 9: Need an operator
"Makefile", line 11: Need an operator
"Makefile", line 42: Missing dependency operator

and so on, until the process stops with the statement:

make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue

I feel like a real shlub not being able to find a fix for this. Can someone give me advice?

Thanks in advance.

Please read the INSTALL file...

Oh, you meant read *the entire* INSTALL file - FreeBSD notes, as well...

Is my face red?

It must be frustrating (and maddening) to get a question like this.

As soon as I am able to get this beast to install Ghostscript-gnu, I'll be ready to start again. I have great confidence that all future difficulties will be operator error, not driver-related.

Thanks for your patience.
