Thank you for your help. I started over with the fink install and that wanted to install two ghostscript packages. At that point I stopped it and downloaded the ghostscript-fonts bundle and installed that in my previous ghostscript 8.60 build and then it started working. During the upgrade Apple must have blown away the ghostscripts fonts folder and the basic ghostscript package doesn't include any fonts. That's why the printer was happy to get firmware but never any real page data,
So if anyone else has a setup almost working, check and make sure you have the 35 fonts for ghostscript.
