cc is not installed [EEE]

I am trying to install foo2zjs on a eee pc for an HP P1005 printer.

I've downloaded & installed the driver software and moved to the foo2zjs directory.

Make returns the following message -

"Error: cc is not installed! .... Install Software Development (gcc) package"

I have installed gcc.

"gcc -v" responds ...gcc version 4.3.2....
"gcc hello.c; ./a.out" responds hello, world = as it should

Does anyone have any clues?

Regards
Arthur ( Linux beginner! )

Read the INSTALL file.
ASUS EEE PC NOTES
-----------------

    It is a version of Xandros. First:

        Get a shell by typing ctrl-alt-T
        $ sudo su -
        # vi or kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list
            add the following line:
                deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
        # apt-get -f install
        # apt-get install wget
        # apt-get install build-essential
        <ctrl-d>

        $ wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz
        $ tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz
        $ cd foo2zjs
        $ make
        $ ./getweb 1020
            OR other printer, e.g. 2600n
        $ sudo make install install-hotplug cups

    Then use the "Add Printer" GUI.

Did all that as far as I know and gcc seems to work OK on a "Hello World" example.

"make" obviously finds the Makefile which can't find CC.

What did I miss?

$ type cc gcc

What does that say?

the response (after sudo su -) is -

-su: type: cc: not found
gcc is /usr/bin/gcc

BTW the prompt is "asus-940376045/root>"

When I look at Makefile CC is a script variable ( I think ). I tried setting CC=gcc but it made no difference.

Thanks for your interest rickrich.

NO! Don't do "sudo su -" before! You should have the "$ " prompt, NOT the "# " prompt!

$ type gcc
$ ls -l /usr/bin/gcc
$ make all-test

What does that say?

The normal prompt is "/home/usr>" not "$"

"type gcc" response = "gcc is /usr/bin/gcc"

"ls -l /usr/bin/gcc" response = "1rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Aug 1 01:15 /usr/bin/gcc -> gcc-4.3"

"make all-test" response = "make: *** No rule to make target 'all-test'.stop."

If I cd to /root/foo2zjs

"make all-test" response = "... Error:cc is not installed etc"
