lsusb and missing printers [solved; Ubuntu 9.10]

I realize that this has likely nothing at all to do with foo2zjs, but after running in a stable configuration for the past 5-6 weeks, my printer has stopped working and I am soliciting guidance from the experts here. This is all too familiar to those who invoke lsusb only to find that their printer isn't listed (anymore).

I have unplugged and plugged in the mains/power cord, unplugged and plugged in the USB cable, orientated the printer so that the paper path is aligned to Polaris, invoked the spirit of Glooscap, and short of waiting for a total eclipse, I am at a loss. The most common fix,

- blacklisting 'usblp' via adding /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-cups.conf, I had done in March.

Any guidance would be gratefully appreciated.

System is Ubuntu 9.10, and the printer is an HP 1020. Symptoms are printer queue sees the job and then the job disappears without anything being printed. /var/log/cups/access_log shows:

localhost - - [22/Apr/2010:18:44:28 -0400] "POST /printers/HP-LaserJet-1020-Papa-Office HTTP/1.1" 200 152959 Print-Job successful-ok

/var/log/messages shows:

Please do:
        $ rm -rf foo2zjs

        $ sudo apt-get install build-essential foomatic-filters groff

        $ wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz
        $ tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz
        $ cd foo2zjs
        $ sudo make uninstall
        $ make
        $ ./getweb 1020
        $ sudo make install
        $ sudo make install-hotplug      # IMPORTANT!!!
Then: Power down and up the printer.

What does this say:
$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
GET_DEVICE_ID string:
MFG:Hewlett-Packard;MDL:HP LaserJet 1020;CMD:ACL;CLS:PRINTER;DES:HP LaserJet 1020;FWVER:20050309;
Works good on a Ubuntu 9.10 laptop.

Thank you, Rick!

A couple of extra steps to the recipe that you outlined:

$ sudo make install

# This is because sudo make install-hotplug requested the following step
$ sudo apt-get uninstall system-config-printer-udev

$ sudo make install-hotplug

# Still nothing, so I rebooted. Still nothing, so I ran:

$ sudo make install-hotplug

# Printer starts to do its "I'm here, awake, and ready" jig. Print of test page, and then *success*!

Many thanks, again.
