Samsung CLP-315 problem on Mandriva 2010.1[solved; CUPS issue]

Mandriva 2010.1, and a CLP-315. It used to work fine with my previous Mandriva.

I followed the instructions at http://foo2qpdl.rkkda.com/ as much as I could. They said to use printerdrake in Mandriva which in fact Mandriva stopped using long ago; they use system-config-printer now. Trying to uninstall foo2zjs, then follow the instructions, then run system-config-printer caused system-config-printer to refuse to run unless I let it automatically download Mandiva's vesion of the driver.

However this time when I picked a driver I could see extra CLP-315 listed (there used to be two, now there were four) so I assume one of those is the new one from http://foo2qpdl.rkkda.com/ . At any rate, even picking a new driver makes no difference to my problem.

The problem is that after I print a couple of times, the printer no longer works until I reboot it. Restarting cups is not necessary to get it to work again, only rebooting the printer. It seems that printing a page containing one sentence (through enscript) is unlikely to cause the printer to stop working, printing a full web page with graphics is more likely, and printing it in color even more so than that--most of the time even one color page causes the printer to stop working, but I can easily print five single sentence pages and have no problems.

Printing single line text file:

Nov 29 23:03:10 localhost foo2qpdl-wrapper: foo2qpdl-wrapper -z2 -r1200x600 -p0 -m0 -s1 -C10 -Gsamclp315-argyll-0.icm
Nov 29 23:03:11 localhost foo2qpdl-wrapper: gs -sPAPERSIZE=letter -g10200x6600 -r1200x600 -sDEVICE=pbmraw -dCOLORSCREEN -dMaxBitmap=500000000
Nov 29 23:03:11 localhost foo2qpdl-wrapper: foo2qpdl -r1200x600 -g10200x6600 -p0 -m0 -n1 -d1 -s1 -z2 -u 150x100 -l 150x100

Printing color webpage:

Nov 29 23:03:59 localhost foo2qpdl-wrapper: foo2qpdl-wrapper -z2 -c -r1200x600 -p0 -m0 -s1 -C10 -Gsamclp315-argyll-0.icm
Nov 29 23:03:59 localhost foo2qpdl-wrapper: foo2zjs-icc2ps -o /usr/share/foo2qpdl/icm/samclp315-argyll-0.icm -t0 > /tmp/icc20032.crd.ps
Nov 29 23:04:09 localhost foo2qpdl-wrapper: gs -sPAPERSIZE=letter -g10200x6600 -r1200x600 -sDEVICE=bitcmyk -dCOLORSCREEN -dMaxBitmap=500000000 /tmp/icc20032.usecie.ps /tmp/icc20032.crd.ps /tmp/icc20032.selcrd.ps
Nov 29 23:04:09 localhost foo2qpdl-wrapper: foo2qpdl -r1200x600 -g10200x6600 -p0 -m0 -n1 -d1 -s1 -z2 -c -u 150x100 -l 150x100 -B -A

Printing a second color webpage gives me exactly the same thing except for a different temp file name. The printer's light blinks a few times but it doesn't print anything.

Please save the file you are trying to print in Postscript (*.ps) and put it on the web so I can find it.

http://www.rahul.net/arromdee/foo.ps

Printing it twice gives me this; the second print fails.

$ for i in 1 2 3 4 5; do
     lpr -Pclp315 tmp/foo.ps
done
$

Printed five copies with *no* problems on Fedora 13 and Samsung CLP-315.

I can confirm that a second print fails. It doesn't matter what I try to print second; every print fails.

System: Gentoo
CUPS: 1.4.6
GS: 9.01

It looks like as if more recent versions of $something break it.

Is there a way to debug the issue? It looks to me that the printer rejects subsequent print attempts; I hear a click followed by a blinking LED for a few seconds when attempting the second print, but nothing more happens. The LED stops blinking after like 5 seconds. No errors are in the log, even with debugging turned on.

Please note that CUPS 1.4.x uses libusb and /dev/usb/* instead of usblp.

I tried using usblp, that works. The question would be: Why doesn't it work with CUPS for subsequent jobs?

Summary: usblp works, CUPS 1.4.x uses libusb, which fails on subsequent jobs.

EDIT: I meant jobs, not pages. Multi Page works fine.

CUPS problem. Not my issue. Fedora 14 uses CUPS 1.4.6, and it works with "/dev/usb/lp0".

$ rpm -q cups
cups-1.4.6-1.fc14.i686

For those who have the same problem: It seems that when using CUPS 1.4.6 without the usblp patches, the issue described here occurs.

I just downgraded to CUPS 1.4.4, which seems to work. Unless I report back with something else, users should downgrade to 1.4.4.
