I am facing an identical situation here; I have a Dell latitude 610 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed, and I am trying to install a Laserjet p1006

I followed the Download and Install walkthrough, make had all of the dependencies checking out, and no errors occurred.

I got the proper firmware file for the p1006, and make install ran with no issues. I then ran install-hotplug, which also ran with no issues, and then I restarted cups using the make cups command.

I tell the printer configuration utility present in gnome to search for a new printer, it recognises the printer as the appropriate model, and creates the proper entry in the window. I checked the firmware image its using, and it is using the appropriate file, and it is using foo2xqx.

Everything stops running smoothly once I try to print a test page, or any other type of print job, as once I make the job, it queues it, and then simply hangs at "processing."

I tried both reconnecting and re-installing the printer multiple times, and this issue has not stopped. Any help would be appreciated.


P.S. around re-install attempt #3, I tried to use hplip, which also has the same issues. They may be inter-related, but I am uncertain.

What does this say:

$ sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0

When I run that command, usb_printerid tells me that the directory does not exist. I checked /dev with a ls -all, and I have no folder labelled as usb.

$ sudo apt-get remove hplip\*
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

Power down and up the printer.

What does this say:

$ sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0

I had the same problem as amb5224, and the same results at each step. This last step successfully printed the test page. Where should I go from here?

    Don't use hp://<whatever> because that is for hplip (a closed source,
    proprietary driver).

Here it a screenshot- substitute P1006 for P1006.

Your suggestion to try copying a test file directly to the device worked, and when checking the device's URI, it was showing correctly as usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1006. I am unsure how exactly it changed from its previous URI, which was also a usb:// line, but the printer will print jobs and test pages now.

If I have any further troubles, I think you've helped me enough to bungle through it myself. Thanks for the help.

I received the following response:
cp: cannot create regular file `/dev/usb/lp0': Device or resource busy

$ sudo apt-get remove hplip\*
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

Power down and up the printer.

What does this say:

$ sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
