Hangs after printing page [Solved. Ubuntu 8.04]
Posted by: Daryl ()
Date: December 23, 2008 02:44PM

I just installed a P1006 on my Ubuntu 8.04 and ran all the configuration, including the foo2zjs installation. When I print a test page or a page from a normal document, I get a physical page out of the printer, but there is still a job in the queue that must be manually canceled. Any help will be appreciated.

Here is the output of system-config-print's troubleshooter:

Page 1 (Choose printer):
{'cups_dest': <cups.Dest object at 0x8704020>,
'cups_instance': None,
'cups_queue': 'HP_LaserJet_P1006',
'cups_queue_listed': True}
Page 2 (Check printer sanity):
{'cups_device_uri_scheme': u'hp',
'cups_printer_dict': {'device-uri': u'hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1006?serial=AC1WKK2',
'printer-info': u'HP_LaserJet_P1006',
'printer-is-shared': True,
'printer-location': u"Daryl's Office",
'printer-make-and-model': u'HP LaserJet P1006 Foomatic/hpijs-ZJS (recommended)',
'printer-state': 4,
'printer-state-message': u'',
'printer-state-reasons': [u'other'],
'printer-type': 36868,
'printer-uri-supported': u'ipp://localhost:631/printers/HP_LaserJet_P1006'},
'is_cups_class': False}
Page 3 (Printer state reasons):
{'printer-state-message': '', 'printer-state-reasons': 'other'}
Page 4 (Print test page):

'test_page_successful': False}

With a genuine toner?

Well, I hadn't thought of that misinterpretation of my wording. :) The "physical page" is properly printed (not a "blank" physical page). So it prints the page, but there is still the same job in the queue.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should add that the sequence I followed to install foo2zjs was:
make
make install
re-read instructions and realize I skipped a step
./getweb P1006
make install
make install-hotplug
make cups

That seems like a harmless sequence, but I mention it "just in case."

Wrong:

URI: 'cups_printer_dict': {'device-uri': u'hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1006?serial=AC1WKK2',

Should be usb://<whatever>
hp:/<whatever> is used by hplip, not my driver.

Wrong:

'printer-make-and-model': u'HP LaserJet P1006 Foomatic/hpijs-ZJS (recommended)'

Here is the settings for P1005. Replace P1005 with P1006.

Yes, a genuine HP toner, I even pulled the little orange ringy thingy pulled off myself. This is a brand new printer, fresh out of the box this morning.

I modified the URI as described and took a step backward--the test page does not print now. Here's the new "improved" output from the print config troubleshooter:

Page 1 (Choose printer):
{'cups_dest': <cups.Dest object at 0x900caa0>,
'cups_instance': None,
'cups_queue': 'HP_LaserJet_P1006',
'cups_queue_listed': True}
Page 2 (Check printer sanity):

'cups_printer_dict': {'device-uri': u'usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1006',
'printer-info': u'',

'printer-location': u"Daryl's office",
'printer-make-and-model': u'HP LaserJet P1006 Foomatic/foo2xqx (recommended)',
'printer-state': 3,
'printer-state-message': u'No %%BoundingBox: comment in header!',
'printer-state-reasons': [u'connecting-to-device'],
'printer-type': 167956,
'printer-uri-supported': u'ipp://localhost:631/printers/HP_LaserJet_P1006'},
'is_cups_class': False}
Page 3 (Printer state reasons):

'printer-state-reasons': 'connecting-to-device'}

Please power down and up the printer. Then, delete and recreate the printer. Follow this procedure:

Recycled power, deleted printer, recreated printer, still no test page. Troubleshooter output at the bottom. Also, lest there be any doubt about the printer itself, when I install it on my er, um, gulp, Windows XP machine, it works nicely. Also, after the reinstallation and failed print, I recycled power on the printer once more for good measure. Still no luck.

Do:
# usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
What does that say?

It says "Error: No such file or directory: can't open 'dev/usb/lp0'. So out of curiosity I did 'ls /dev/usb' and the only thing there is hiddev0. That didn't look very interesting, so I tried 'find /dev -name "lp0"' and it showed up as /dev/.udev/names/lp0. Running usb_printerid on that told me it was a directory, so I ran "ls -l /dev/.udev/names | grep lp0" and got something weird: \x2fdevices\x2fpnp0\x2f00:0a\x2fprinter\x2flp0. That looked like dragons to me, so beyond that I dared not go.

Reboot the machine and do:

# usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0

Should be there. If it is not, then apply all updates to Ubuntu.

Rebooted, ran "apt-get upgrade", rebooted, ran upgrade tool from System menu, rebooted, reinstalled printer. Still nada, including still no /dev/usb/lp0. I promise. :) I wouldn't make this up. And even after the next paragraph, there is still no /dev/usb/lp0.

Still in an exploring frame of mind, I took a peek at /var/log/cups/error_log. I found a bunch of entries with authentication errors. So I went back and instead of running the printer config utility from the System menu I ran "sudo system-config-printer" and that made a huge difference. Now I can print anything from Linux, Windows XP and Windows Vista, but after each print job there is still a document hanging in the print queue and nothing else will print until that job is cancelled and (by virtue of a weakly designed GUI interface) all print jobs.

One more post for the night...

It seems that the previous report of limited success involved forgetting to edit the URI to the usn://... form. Having deleted the old configuration, re-adding the printer and setting the URI per instructions, I am back to getting no output from the Test Page action, just a job stuck in the print queue.

I reviewed the entire thread, looking for something I may have done wrong. I noticed an assumption in my third post, about missing the .getweb step. So this morning I did:

make clean
make
sudo make uninstall
./getweb P1006
sudo make install
sudo make install-hotplug
<recycle power to printer>

and lo! there is now a /dev/usb/lp0. Amd after a few false starts and recycling the printer power a couple of times, I am now printing from Linux, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. A huge Thank You! and a "Check's in the mail" for your help.

After a few days of printing bliss, my bride called me into her office whining about a problem. I finally traced it down to printing PDF files. She could print anything but PDFs. She had an urgent problem, so I moved the USB cable to my Windows XP box, showed her how to select printers, and she finished up her project. Today I decided to attack the PDF problem, so I moved the USB cable back to my Ubuntu box and now nothing works. I turned the printer off, deleted the old printer config, turned the printer back on, and reconfigured the printer "just as before." The print test page just leaves a job in the Processing state with no output. And there is no /dev/usb/lp0.

Any suggestions? <edited by rick>

Power down and up the system. HPLIP is getting in the way.

Okay. I think the magic potion is "power cycle Linux; power cycle printer".

So now the problem is highly constrained: Adobe Reader cannot print PDFs to this printer from Vista. XP works fine, so far as I can tell. Other Vista apps (Word, Excel, Thunderbird) all print just fine.

Or, remove hplip...
