Fedora 6 [solved: usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1006]

Running FC6. My laserjet1200 is dying. I bought a laserjetp1006. I installed a recent HPLIP. I followed the instructions for installing foo2xqx and it is the installed driver. I get the printing icon in the top left. The computer recognizes the printer. When I print a document, print manager says that the document is printing or, eventually, has been printed. But no paper comes out of the printer.

Just to doublecheck, I hooked up the dying laserjet 1200 and it still prints.

I faithfully followed the installation instructions up to (but not including) make test, because I have a different ghostscript.

I then issued
# system-config-printer
as well as
# make install-hotplug
and I Unplugged and re-plugged the USB printer.

I get an error message from
# usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
Error: No such file or directory: can't open '/dev/usb/lp0'

I actually have usb1 and usb2 but get the same error message when changing usb to usb1 or usb2

Help please!

What is your URI?

# grep URI /etc/cups/printers.conf

Should be usb:/dev/usb/lp1 OR usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1006

$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp1
$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp2

What does that say?

# grep URI /etc/cups/printers.conf
DeviceURI hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1006?serial=AA09958
DeviceURI usb://HP/LaserJet%201200

AHA! Could it be the "hp" in the first line is the reason it doesn't work? I think the second line is for the laserjet 1200.

The command "usb-printerid /dev/usb/lp0" doesn't work but in the
fooszjs subdirectory is a command "usb_printerid" (hyphen changed to underbar)

foo2zjs] usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
Error: No such file or directory: can't open '/dev/usb/lp0'
foo2zjs]$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp1
Error: No such file or directory: can't open '/dev/usb/lp1'
foo2zjs]$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp2
Error: No such file or directory: can't open '/dev/usb/lp2'

Change the URI to be usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1006 (use system-config-printer).
Then power off and on the printer.
Then
$ ls -l /dev/usb
Then
# usb_printerid /dev/usb/WHATEVER
And report to me.

You advised:

Change the URI to be usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1006 (use system-config-printer).
Then power off and on the printer.

This worked!

I bought this printer at steep discount from HP to replace my dying printer. If I couldn't get the drivers to work, I would have to get a new printer, see if it works, etc etc.

You have saved me much time and aggravation. Of course $20 via PayPal is a small price to pay to make this printer work. THANKS THANKS THANKS!

(And such prompt assistance!!! I thought I might have to wait days.! Make that $30 via PayPal !!! THANKS AGAIN THANKS AGAIN!!!)

The page from which to donate by paypal is:
http://foo2xqx.rkkda.com/

I have a paypal account, but for some reason it won't let me donate. I put in the amount, click update, enter my paypal id and password, and then it wants to me put in a credit card? There's already a card associated with my account. And when I enter that particular card, it is rejected "because it's already associate with a paypal account."

So I will send an email to rick.richardson@comcast.net asking for your name and address to which I can send a check.

Thanks again for your prompt help!!!
