Mac : Printer Setup can't find driver

Hi everyone,

I installed foo2oak on my Mac (OS X 10.6.8, Snow Leopard). I followed the instructions in the INSTALL and INSTALL.osx files, and everything seemed to work fine.

The only thing that didn't work first time is that I got a message telling me that it could not copy files in /usr/share/foomatic/db/source, so I created the directory and ran make, getweb 1500 and make install again.

The last step, create printers, is causing me problems. I trying to add the printer using Mac's Printer Setup Utility. It can "see" the printer, but the Foomatic/foo2oak driver for the HP Color LaserJet 1500 doesn't show in the list.

Any hints ?

Thanks,

Yves

$ /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox http://localhost:631
-OR-
$ /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari
...go to http://localhost:631...

Works fine on Mac OSX 10.6. In Add Printer, select "HP", then "Color LaserJet 1500".

Hi Rickrich,

I get the same problem using CUPS (browsing localhost:631 with Firefox) than using Mac's Printer Setup Utility : the Foomatic driver doesn't appear on the list.

From the CUPS / Add printer page :

http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/cups/hp1020.html

On the third screen shot, it says "Add Printer:Model/Driver for..."

http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/cups/ss04.png

We see on the screen shot that it's supposed to show me the Foomatic/foo2oak driver for the HP LaserJet 1500, but I don't see any Foomatic driver on the list.

Looks like I missed a step in the installation process, and the Foomatic drivers didn't get installed on my Mac ?

Thanks,

Yves

$ ls -l /usr/share/cups/model

What does that say?

No "model" directory under /usr/share/cups

Should I create it and rerun the foo2oak installer ?

Thanks !

Yves

Either create it and then sudo make install

OR

redownload the whole thing and untar it, make; ./getweb 1500; sudo make install cups.

From the Changelog:
2011-12-27      Rick Richardson <rick.richardson@comcast.net>
        * Makefile: install-ppd for Mac

Thanks a lot, Rick. Helping people on Dec 27 is really good tech support :-)

Using the default ghostscript (9.04) obtained from "sudo port install ghostscript" in the INSTALL.osx I got B/W 1 bit printing.

Then I uninstalled GS 9.04, and compiled GS 8.71 . There was a problem with the autogen.sh script on Mac, compilation failed on missing iconv library. I ran ./configure --with-iconv=NO and the compilation went fine. "gs --version" now shows 8.71 . When I try to print, the printer's green light will flash for a few seconds, but nothing prints.

Nothing in the console log. The CUPS access log (/private/var/log/cups/access.log) says it worked fine (create job, send document, set attributes) and nothing in error_log.

I rebuilt foo2oak, deleted and created the print queue, still nothing.

Any hints ?

Thanks again,

Yves

What did it do?

It printed, but B/W only. Your xxx.prn is 61774 bytes but mine is 60336.

-rw-r--r-- 1 Yves staff 60336 27 déc 20:31 xxx.prn

The print queue was created (using Mac's interface) with B/W 1 bit by default. I changed it to 1 bit color with CUPS config, then generated a new xxx.prn . Sending the new xxx.prn causes nothing to be printed.

Thanks !

Yves

What did it do with -c?

I deleted the print queue and created it back, using Apple's printer setup utility.

Then, I ran your test with -c, and I got a color print. Yes !!!!

Yesterday through a trial-and-error process I created the print queue using CUPS interface. Is it possible that the printed result is slightly different ? I think the right margin was much better aligned on the sheet (when the print queue was created using CUPS) than it is now.

I tried to print via a Mac OS application, same as before : the printer's green light will flash for a few seconds, and no output.

Thanks again,

Yves

No idea. Probably a CUPS problem, since foo2oak-wrapper -c works. Not my problem.

After you helped me fix remaining problems, I went back to GhostScript 9.04 (with sudo port install ghostscript) to get B/W printing : better than nothing... Can print from Mac apps (Safari). I don't know why GS 8.71 didn't work.

Changed to color printing via CUPS interface (http://localhost:631). Can print in color from Map apps !!!

Thanks a lot for you help, Rick. The "open source" world works because of dedicated people like you. Unfortunately, people are used to get everything for free on the internet (starting with music and movies), so I'm sure it's hard to get anything back from people who use your work. My donation is on its way, Rick.
