Hello

After following the installation instructions carefully,

I'm getting a

Unsupported format 'application/vnd.cups-banner'!

when trying a test page after installing printer via http://localhost:631/

When trying to print a simple line of text from gedit, cups reports:

stopped
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/cpdftocps failed"

I tried the test:

foo2qpdl-wrapper -z0 -p2 testpage.ps > xxx.prn
ls -l xxx.prn
-rw-r--r-- 1 paul paul 92111 2011-12-08 17:35 xxx.prn
nc 192.168.xxx.yyy 9100 < xxx.prn

mentioned in the previous thread and got

nc: getaddrinfo: Name or service not known

Maybe that's useful...

I've been struggling with this printer for a couple of days now. It worked fine a few years ago on a previous Ubuntu installation and I've just dusted it off after my other laser died on me.

Any clues what to do next?

Many thanks, Paul

You have to supply a network address here!

$ nc 192.168.xxx.yyy 9100 < xxx.prn

Don't use "xxx.yyy". Its an example.

Then its a USB problem. Put it on a different controller, switch USB cables, etc.

hmm

I took another known working cable and plugged into a different USB socket. Ubuntu recognised the printer, I deleted the printer it installs.

I installed the Foomatic/foo2qpdl driver through the localhost cups interface

I tried
cp xxx.prn /dev/usb/lp0
again and it hangs again. If I pull the plug I get back to the cursor with

Input/output error

More testing ... The same printer with the same cable works fine on a laptop running Ubuntu 11.10 running auto installed Foomatic/foo2qpdl

I'm at a loss on the 10.04 installation. USB seems fine in all respects...

A further update this morning. SUCCESS with

cp xxx.prn /dev/usb/lp0

However, installation of printer via Cups gives me the same error reported.

What I did to get the xxx.prn to work was to go through my packages and completely remove Samsung, foomatic, foo2zjs, splix, etc packages I could find via Synaptic that weren't part of the core system. I then went through the installation procedure again.

Now that I can print locally directly, what should I look at next??

This calls up the printer dialogue, which contains Samsung CLP-300 on usb://Samsung/CLP-300, Samsung CLP-300 Foomatic/foo2qpdl (recommended). Printer state: Idle

Test (and Self Test) gives

There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-document-format-not-supported'.

Delete the printer and install it again from system-config-printer. It is not my problem.

Many many thanks for your help. I reinstalled:

No ID match for device usb://Samsung/CLP-300:
  <manufacturer>Samsung</manufacturer>
  <model>CLP-300</model>
  <description></description>
  <commandset>SPLC</commandset>
Using foomatic:Samsung-CLP-300-foo2qpdl.ppd (status: 0)

If it isn't down to foo2qpdl, do you have any idea at all where I should turn next? I really don't want to re-install Ubuntu just to solve this (and I want even less to upgrade to 11.x and the dreadful Unity interface!) This 10.04 release has been performing perfectly for a year or so :(

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you

I completely or partially removed as many Cups referenced packages I could find and thought appropriate. Then reinstalled those that seemed relevant.

Test page now works fine!
