Dear Rick,
I have read in one of your answers:

Power down and up the printer.
Then do:
$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0

I tried it but is does not help:

I get:
kebeat@kebeat:~/foo2zjs$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
Error: No such file or directory: can't open '/dev/usb/lp0'

kebeat@kebeat:~$ sudo make install-hotplug
[sudo] password for kebeat:
make: *** No rule to make target `install-hotplug'. Stop.

kebeat@kebeat:~/foo2zjs$ foo2zjs-wrapper -P -r600x600 testpage.ps > xxx
kebeat@kebeat:~/foo2zjs$ cp xxx /dev/usb/lp0
cp: "/dev/usb/lp0" reguláris fájl nem hozható létre: Nincs ilyen fájl vagy könyvtár

Please help me too. Thanks.
Kebeat

Remove hplib. It is a closed source, proprietary driver.

Follow all instructions, including "CUPS USB NOTES" in the INSTALL file.
$ make
$ ./getweb 1000
$ sudo make install install-hotplug cups

 Power down then up the printer.

$ sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
What does that say???

How do I remove hplib?
I have followd the instructions of the installation:

$ sudo apt-get install build-essential
$ wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz
$ tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz
$ cd foo2zjs
$ sudo make uninstall
$ make
$ ./getweb 1000
$ sudo make install install-hotplug cups
Restarted the printer.
Then I specified URI according to the CUPS USB NOTES:
usb://HP/LaserJet%201000
Nothing.
kebeat@kebeat:~$ sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
Error: No such file or directory: can't open '/dev/usb/lp0'

I only use Fedora, but:

$ sudo apt-get remove hplib\*

should do the trick. Then, reboot.

Done. Rebooted.
First it did not print, but finally (I dont know why) it is OK.
I still do not understand. It is not the first time I install this driver, but until now I never had to remove hplib in this way.
Thank you very very much.
