Read the file "INSTALL.osx".

That involves installing Xcode, right?

I have Xcode 3.1.4 installed. It looks like that kind of broke when I upgraded to Snow Leopard, because when I run "make", it says "command not found." (http://superuser.com/questions/155188/snow-leopard-make-command-not-found-even-though-xcode-is-installed was not posted by me, but it describes the symptoms.)

So, download the newest version of Xcode, the thread says. That didn't sound too bad, but it looks like in order to do that, I need to either become a member of the Mac Developer Program (for $99/year) or get Xcode 4.2.1 for Lion from the App Store (and, I assume, buy Lion in order to use it).

Just checking, did I miss a way to proceed that doesn't involve buying something from Apple? (People wonder why I hesitate to upgrade my OS. This is why.)
