Hey, just a quick thanks for the good work. I needed to use a Magicolor 2300DL on my company's network, and now am able to print.

BTW, I was not smart enough to read your install.osx file first, so I figured it out myself. I used Darwinports for ghostscript and got the DMG for Foomatic-RIP from http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/foomatic.

Compile went flawlessly. Used CUPS to install and configure. The only bump I hit was that MS PowerPoint ignored the CUPS printing options (e.g. color). Fixed that by changing the options in PowerPoint's print options.

Thanks a bunch.

First I want to thank the programmers of this driver, who make it possible to use my HP Laserjet 1018 with Ubuntu.
Unfortunately it took a few hours for me to install the driver according to the instructions on http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/INSTALL. The reason why it didn't work was that the http_proxy-variable in my shell was not exported. So "./getweb 1018", which uses the wget command didn't work. I think it would be helpful to add a hint to the INSTALL file to export the proxy server for people who use it

Which kernel version ? (1 reply)

Medical equipment attached to a linux box came with some kind of customized-RedHat9 version to wich I don't have access, passwords and stuff, no console access... Very few kinds of printers are predefined, most of which are not produced any more, and can't be found on the market.
It's runinng on a 2.4.* kernel version, so it would be nice to know: is the present foo2zjs compatible with this kernel ? It's the only issue that bothers me, because i have idea to solve te problem with access restriction, and will share with readers o this forum :
1. I plan to attach this HDD as a slave to a regular machine whit a regular Linux.

2. Copy and gunzip+untar the script to /slavedisc/somedir/with/foo2zjs.

3. Add this lines of a shell script to (for example) /etc/rc.boot, or similar :

######### Begining of example lines ############
cd /somedir/with/foo2zjs
make
make install
make install-hotplug
make whatEverIsNeeded
cd
# Following is to guarantee that these lines will be executed only once :
mv /somedir/with/foo2zjs /someother/foo2zjs/directory
######### End of example lines ############

4.Connect the HDD back to it's original box.

This way the driver will be installed during the boot. So, as i mentioned, it's the kernel 2.4.* compatibility issue that worries me...

The second solution that came up is :
1. Install original Red Hat 9 on some computer
2. Isntall foo2zjs on that one
3. Make a tarball with all the needed files
4. Copy all of these files to the destination disc.
But there is a problem, i dont know which files are nesecery, and where are all of them copied during the install (which goes where) ?

If foo2zjs is not compatible with this kernel, could someone please give me advice how to solve this situation ?
Is there a workng RPM package with foo2zjs for Red Hat 9 ?
Which files go to wich directory during the instalation ?

I'm setting up an HP1018 on an older machine running Xubuntu 7.04. Problem is, the machine is sitting off in the bush in Zambia, they barely have electricity, no phone lines and no internet access. Is there some way of doing the installation without internet access? Any ideas?

Hello,

I have cups running on a linux server and printing (mostly) successfully to a Magicolor 2300DL.

I want to get my Mac to print via the linux CUPS server to the printer, but I don't want to compile the foomatic drivers on the Mac as well and would instead like to use the Generic Postscript Driver. The problem is that the Mac then sends the document with type "application/vnd.cups-raw" (in the debug logs from cupsd) which then gets dumped straight to the printer as a bunch of raw text.

I'd like to use some cups-fu to auto-filter that job into type application/postscript so that the normal cups filters can do their thing and translate the job server-side. I tried adding the filter line "application/vnd.cups-raw application/postscript 0 -" but that had no effect; I'm guessing that cups doesn't respect filters on the raw data type? Anyone have any ideas here?

Hello folks,

Last week, I noticed that the "jobs" pages on CUPS admin always showed
"Unknown" for the number of pages printed to my HP1018; moreover, I checked
/var/log/cups/page_log and it was empty.

After some investigation, I found that CUPS depends on 'PAGE: n c' lines being
output to stderr by pstops or one of the filters that are called for each page
printed. Also, I found that when there's a PPD file configured for the printer,
and that PPD defines at least 1 filter for it (as is the case with the.PPD files
included with the foo2zjs package), the pstops program does NOT output the
'PAGE: n c' lines, and so the CUPS page accounting can't register the number of
pages being printed. I checked the source for other filters (e.g, rastertohp)
and found that they indeed do output the required 'PAGE: n c' lines.

From the above, I concluded that the problem is caused by foo2zjs not outputting
the 'PAGE: n c' lines to stderr, so I made the following patch to the current
(Thu Jul 12 19:31:54 2007 CDT) source tarball:

1. Xubuntu doesn't provide the gome-cups-manager, you just get basic cups stuff like lpadmin and lpinfo.

2. cups is a bit broken on Dapper Drake ( see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=452459)

I originally followed the basic installation instructions, but they failed 'cos it couldn't see the USB printer and then when I got to the lpadmin command it couldn't copy the ppd file - I had specified the ~/foo2zjs/PPD folder.

This is how I fixed it:

1. The printer needs to be plugged in first - it's then seen as: usb://Samsung/CLP-300 when you type:
$lpinfo -v

2. I uninstalled the printer using the documentation for foomatic:

sudo make uninstall

3. Then I followed the cups uninstall instructions at:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=452459

which are:

sudo foomatic-cleanupdrivers
sudo adduser cupsys shadow
sudo dpkg-reconfigure cupsys

(this last application is interactive, it leads you through many choices, I chose defaults for everything apart from where the interface was specified, I was able to choose USB).

4. Then I followed the foo2qpdl install instructions:

http://foo2qpdl.rkkda.com/INSTALL

But I didn't try the ubuntu gnome-cups-manager, because xubuntu doesn't use it.

I had noticed that it had inserted .gz versions of the ppd files into /usr/share/cups/model so I figured the ppd's have been put in the right place.

5. I used Applications->System->Users and Groups to see whether I was in the lpadmin group and I was, so that was good.

6. Then I followed the instructions on setting up the Cups printer via http://localhost:631/. That was fairly straightforward. I clicked on 'Administration', then 'Add Printer'. The printer name, description and location stuff are just names and descriptions you make up. The Make and Model: Samsung CLP-300 Foomatic/foo2qpdl was listed in the drop-down on the next page so I didn't have to browse for a .ppd, and the device URI was also listed amongst the options.

7. Then it asked me for my username and password - which it accepted and then it told me the printer had now been installed. Great!

I then setup the printer's configuration: A4, 1up etc and finally made it the default printer. And finally I printed a couple of pages using it!

Great! And then I paid $15 for the software - so I'm one of the handful of IP addresses now :-)

I found a solution for this problem for my laserjet 1018. I suppose the same problem also occurs with other printers of the laserjet 10xx series (1000, 1005, 1020).

I posted it the 1018-section. See
