I realize that this has likely nothing at all to do with foo2zjs, but after running in a stable configuration for the past 5-6 weeks, my printer has stopped working and I am soliciting guidance from the experts here. This is all too familiar to those who invoke lsusb only to find that their printer isn't listed (anymore).

I have unplugged and plugged in the mains/power cord, unplugged and plugged in the USB cable, orientated the printer so that the paper path is aligned to Polaris, invoked the spirit of Glooscap, and short of waiting for a total eclipse, I am at a loss. The most common fix,

- blacklisting 'usblp' via adding /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-cups.conf, I had done in March.

Any guidance would be gratefully appreciated.

System is Ubuntu 9.10, and the printer is an HP 1020. Symptoms are printer queue sees the job and then the job disappears without anything being printed. /var/log/cups/access_log shows:

localhost - - [22/Apr/2010:18:44:28 -0400] "POST /printers/HP-LaserJet-1020-Papa-Office HTTP/1.1" 200 152959 Print-Job successful-ok

/var/log/messages shows:

This may not be a foo2zjs issue, but I thought that I would post it here as well just in case someone else is facing a similar problem. I had previously reported a problem like this when upgrading from Ubuntu Hardy to Jaunty, which was resolved via this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/foomatic-filters/+bug/338999

This was resolved, and we had been functional since then.

I have now done a fresh Karmic installed, and am back to being unable to print using the Custom PageSize option. I too have suffered through the connectivity issues that are widely reported. I wonder if there is still an interdependency that is falling through the cracks. The connectivity thing seems to be hit and miss, and yes I did follow the instructions explicity. Anyway, here is the fresh bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/foomatic-filters/+bug/539242

The part of the /var/log/cups/error_log file that seems to point to a problem states:

Starting renderer with command: "foo2zjs-wrapper -P -z1 -L0 -r1200x600 -pCustom.198x450 -m1 -s7 "
If there any ideas that anyone can offer, I'd be most grateful.

Followed the install instructions. The device installed correctly (I think). However usb_printerid showed that I could not detect anything with usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0. I decided to remove hplip.

Then changed manually the Device URI to usb:/dev/usb/lp0. Nothing happened. Decided to turn off/on printer. Now a different printer was found hp laserjet 2. Decided that this new printer probably is the real printer (I have only one printer). The Device URI had now changed automatically to usb://HP/LaserJet%201020. When I print a page, cups report this:

E [01/Dec/2009:13:38:19 +0100] Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Print-Job (ipp://localhost/printers/HP-LaserJet-1020-2) from localhost

Printing a Self-Test Page shows CUPS server error lient-error-document-format-not-supported.

edit: Turned printer on and off again. Now the reported error in cups is the following, both when printing page and self-test page:
[cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/drv/sample.drv"!

Hello,

I have been using my 1020 reliably for many months under Ubuntu 8.04. A great part of what I print out are custom paper sizes: 3x5 index cards, envelopes, menus, etc. All have worked flawlessly. So for instance:

lp -o PageSize=Custom.4.125x9.5in -o landscape

would allow me to print on a standard No. 10 envelope by placing the envelope in the manual feed tray with the guides brought in, which means the paper is fed over the centreline of the paper path.

Recently I upgraded to 8.10 and now the images print on the left most side of the page, which means custom pages no longer work; there is only a single roller in the middle of the paper path.

Any help that could be offered would be most appreciated. I am desperate to get this working.

Thank you.

Hi,

I have a HP Laser Jet 1020. I connect it to Linux machine. CUPS can detect the printer:

Description: Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 1020
Location:
Printer Driver: Local Raw Printer
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: usb://HP/LaserJet%201020

However, when I try to print from my Windows workstation, nothing print out but CUPS reported the job completed and successful.

I think it is not my configuration problem as I have another Samsung ML1450 laser jet connect to the CUPS works flawlessly.

I am not sure if this problem is related to Host-Based Printer problem. I don't need to print from Linux machine itself. I print from windows workstation using network printing and send the RAW print data to the printer:

port: http://linux_server:631/printers/hp1020

Will foo2zjs helps? Should I go thru' the installation procedures as describe to get the job done?

I'm asking here since it is only my printer that does this, perhaps someone has seen this?

I realize this has nothing to do with foo2*.

Sometimes on boot, my system will hang while trying to connect my HPLJ1020. Note this is in early boot, I actually still have the "Kernel is alive" message on the screen.
I'm not sure, but I think it only does this when the printer does not yet have firmware loaded.

I would expect a bad cable, but after this initial screwup (and the rest of boot) it comes up fine as a hi-speed device and works without issue.

Hi,

I have similar problem which occurs in thread Hp LaserJet 1020 on Opensuse 10.3, in OpenSuSE 10.1 now.

In OpenSuSE 10.1 problem differs probably. Binary "usb_printerid" from RPM package "filters" is located in another directory. "hplj1000" script uses /bin/usb_printerid, but it is located in /usr/bin/.

Possible solution is to change it by this way:

hplj1000:
...
PRINTERID=`which usb_printerid`
...

Following the instructions, I got my HP 1020 working great on ubuntu hardy.

Any ideas on how to get the manual duplex working? (It worked fine in Windoz.)

Also, in VMware, when I enable the HP USB device, XP goes to BSOD. Any ideas on how to fix that?

Thanks!

Greetings -

This works great in general, but there's a hang-up for me. When I turn my printer off and then back on without rebooting the computer, it doesn't work any more. I have solved this in the past by sending the firmware to the printer by hand after a power-cycle, but I thought that's what the hotplug support was supposed to solve. Furthermore, I question if this is actually what I did because of the result of the following line:

$ tail /var/log/messages
...

Jul 21 06:56:07 david-home-desktop /etc/hotplug/usb/hplj1020: foo2zjs: ... download successful.

The problem is that when I try printing anything, nothing happens. I can avoid this problem by keeping the printer on when I boot-up my computer; then it works without any problems. The problem only arises when I turn the printer off, then on again, without rebooting my PC.

So, any thoughts?

My printer worked in the past; then quit. I installed your driver per instructions; no error messages! Printer still did not work. Re-booted the computer, printer does nothing. Re-booted the computer into Windows XP (installed on a separate HD) to confirm that printer worked, and it did! Booted back into Ubuntu - now printer works. Does Windows change something at a very basic level?

Installed on Mandriva 2008, and prints.
But when I send two or more documents right one after another, there is 40 seconds delay between first and second document. If I print over a network, the delay is 60 seconds.

What to do in order to get this delay shorter ?
This is not a cable issue, because the same hardware prints fine under Windows.

ps2pdf is failing during make, (man pages -> ps -> pdf). Something about the Courier font.

This is likely an issue with my system, any ideas where to dig?

To be sure this wasn't related to my other issue, I rebuilt after editing the manual.pdf details out of the makefile (and it didn't effect the other issue).
