Trying to set up the HP1006 printer, using a Debian live cd that was set up in VB. Unable to download the printer file although it shows downloaded, shows extracted and shows list of extracted files. I can read some of them. All this happens while I am on the web site. When I close the browser, there is nothing in Debian in my VB regards the download and therefore I am unable to set up the printer.
I believe, and this is only a guess, it has to do with using a live CD, which I mentioned was set up in VB. Can the printer be set up using this live cd? Does anyone have any thoughts here?

I am facing an identical situation here; I have a Dell latitude 610 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed, and I am trying to install a Laserjet p1006

I followed the Download and Install walkthrough, make had all of the dependencies checking out, and no errors occurred.

I got the proper firmware file for the p1006, and make install ran with no issues. I then ran install-hotplug, which also ran with no issues, and then I restarted cups using the make cups command.

I tell the printer configuration utility present in gnome to search for a new printer, it recognises the printer as the appropriate model, and creates the proper entry in the window. I checked the firmware image its using, and it is using the appropriate file, and it is using foo2xqx.

Everything stops running smoothly once I try to print a test page, or any other type of print job, as once I make the job, it queues it, and then simply hangs at "processing."

I tried both reconnecting and re-installing the printer multiple times, and this issue has not stopped. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. around re-install attempt #3, I tried to use hplip, which also has the same issues. They may be inter-related, but I am uncertain.

Hi,

I followed your instructions to the letter, but my P1006 won't print on Ubuntu 9.10.

The computer recognizes the printer when it's turned on and plugged in. I can send a document to the printer. The printing queue says "Processing" forever, and the document does not print.

Also, it's funny to note that the installation instructions on foo2zjs.rkkda.com are totally identical to the installation instructions on foo2xqx.rkkda.com. Am I not supposed to be given instructions on how to install the foo2xqx driver on foo2xqx.rkkda.com? The problem is that the instructions there tell me how to install the foo2zjs driver! Anyhow, the driver isn't working for me.
Please advise, thanks.

Running FC6. My laserjet1200 is dying. I bought a laserjetp1006. I installed a recent HPLIP. I followed the instructions for installing foo2xqx and it is the installed driver. I get the printing icon in the top left. The computer recognizes the printer. When I print a document, print manager says that the document is printing or, eventually, has been printed. But no paper comes out of the printer.

Just to doublecheck, I hooked up the dying laserjet 1200 and it still prints.

I faithfully followed the installation instructions up to (but not including) make test, because I have a different ghostscript.

I then issued
# system-config-printer
as well as
# make install-hotplug
and I Unplugged and re-plugged the USB printer.

I get an error message from
# usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
Error: No such file or directory: can't open '/dev/usb/lp0'

I actually have usb1 and usb2 but get the same error message when changing usb to usb1 or usb2

Help please!

Hi,
few minutes ago I installed your driver and tested my newly bouhgt printer :-)

When I print with 1200x600 dpi resolution, everythink is OK
When I print with 600x600 dpi resolution, it seems, there is almost nothing printed - (almost) horizontal lines are printed, but everything else not.
I tried different settings, but 600x600 always "fails".

Just bought a new P1006 and I'm having some trouble making it work - hopefully someone here can help out.

I've followed the install directions for foo2xqx. I'm able to print a test page, looks fine. Printing web pages results in the very top being cut off (just a fraction - I can see the bottom half of the URL line at the top-left). When printing PDFs strange things happen. Only part of the page prints but it's not entirely predictable which part. Some files print all but the top fraction of an inch (much like web pages). One in particular is printing a section from the middle of the page - the header, footer and half of the right side are not there.

I've installed this printer through the KDE print manager, through the system-config-printer program. I've tried the hplip program suggested by HP (different, but still strange, results). After removing all of that I installed foo2xqx as per the instructions given.

Hello!

I downloaded the foo2xqx driver and installed it according to the instructions you've laid out. Instead of printing blank pages however, I get nothing. Not a whir or a click. When I do the print test--

$ sudo cp xxx /dev/usb/lp0

...it jumps to life for the Red Hat Printconf test like it's been waiting for me this whole time.

CUPS sees the printer and says it's there; ready to go.

Any ideas? I ditched my Lexmark X4270 (paperweight) for this machine and I had hoped to be up and running already...

Thanks.

I downloaded the foo2zjs tar from the website and installed it according to the instructions. I am using Kubuntu Gutsy. All seemed to go well - I see the correct printer name in the KDE printer setup utility. However, when I send a test page to print, all that comes out is a blank sheet. If I complete the setup, and try to print from editors, I still get blank pages.

I have repeated the install process twice, with the same results.
Any clues?

Happy holidays, and hope you get your Mac Mini soon ;-)

The latest version of foo2xqx worked very well with my P1006, and although I couldn't automatically download firmware into the printer by calling it up as a banner page (maybe a clever person can wrap it in a bit of Postscript code?), I was able to map the appropriate command to a single menu choice in K Menu, and that wasn't too bad.

I ultimately returned the P1006 in favor of a LaserJet P2015DN, because HP's $150 rebate plus local $100 discounts meant that this $500 printer was now selling for $250 versus $179 for the P1006, and that seemed like a really modest price for gaining a built-in print server, web administration, lower per-page print costs, even a duplexer. And it does away with the need to download firmware into the printer at the start of every printing session.

Although I was initially attracted to the P1006's small size, I think this business about "soft" firmware was one cost-cutting step too many for my tastes.

Thanks once again,

Further testing has revealed:

As a shared (JetDirect) printer hanging off my Apple Airport Extreme Base Station ("AEBS", socket://192.168.1.1:9100) it works only if the first print is made from my iBook running OS X, or I plug the printer into the USB port of my PC, send a print through, then reconnect printer to Airport Base Station without powering the printer down.

Attempting to send the first print from the Kubuntu PC to the shared printer on the AEBS seems to cause the AEBS to lose it's print services: Avahi Zeroconf Browser either no longer shows any printer connected to the AEBS, else it's status is frozen and does not return to normal until I restart the AEBS.

I don't know how relevant this is, but when I'm sending the first print to the AEBS-shared printer from OS X, the printer comes alive like it's about to print, then goes quiet, wakes up again, goes quiet, perhaps a total of 3 times before it actually begins to print.
