Hi.

I have a p1005, printing under cups, which is printing faintly after a replacement cartridge. Is there any way to compensate by adding more saturation to the driver?
Perhaps a ghostscript option? About the only thing I can fiddle in cups is resolution, and it doesn't print on low res.

Please point me here.

I have an install of Slackware 12 with foozjs working for about a year, the envy of my windows nerd kids. Then it stopped loading firmware on hot plugging it, but still loaded firmware on bootup. I think that's what's going wrong because I never get the orange light.

Now it won't load firmware at all. I have the firmware in /usr/share/foo2xqx/sihpP1005.dl. Even loading firmware manually as root
cat /usr/share/foo2xqx/sihpP1005.dl >/dev/usb/lp0 (which exists) does nothing. Logs show no errors - the printer is recognized and the usblp module loaded. I can't undo my mistakes because I haven't made any.

I still have the sihpP1005.img file - can I convert it to dl format without the sources?

Hi all,
I have the same printer.

I removed hplip, followed all instructions to install, added the printer on CUPS using the Foomatic/foo2xqx driver, but it doesn't print at all.. all jobs remain in queue

Using Slackware64 13

I've installed my printer HP P1005 in Debian Lenny and it works.
I've installed it also in Linux Mint 8 Fluxbox CE (Ubuntu 9.10) and it doesn't work. Why?
I've followed the same help:

i use linux mint 7 on dell lattitude D830. i have tried several times to install driver. i used foo2xqx from foo2zjs. many times i have been able to take print but it was soon after installation. once computer is switched OFF, then ON it was not working. the error message was 'printer may not be connect' actually the printer was connected. once it was failure of foomatic.rip
after all this i want to know
what should be the URI
if i have firmware on local machine than what command should be used instead of $./getweb P1007.

Why the permission is denied, i have downloaded sihpP1005.tar.gz through firefox and extracted it to sihpP1005.img in /home/manoj/foo2xqx. can it be used instead of downloading it everytime.

Hey there.

Read through a lot of topics and followed the instructions. No print.

Here's some info:

$ usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
GET_DEVICE_ID string:

This seems to be the correct output, afaict. When I stop/start the printer I see hotplug uploading the firmware.

Here's what I did then:

$ foo2zjs-wrapper testpage.ps > testpage.zm
$ zjsdecode < testpage.zm (lots of info there, I'd say it's ok)
$ cp testpage.zm /dev/usb/lp0 <- no output. Same for cat testpage.zm > /dev/usb/lp0

Hello there, for some reason I can NOT get this printer to work.

I have tried to configure it with Hplip's newest tool, it won't find it, tried with yast2 and it says its installed but refuses to print, and also with cups, it says that it is installed but it won't print there either. I added new printer in cups and selected the USB printer in device list, as well as appsocket/hp jetdirect and tried uri of usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1005 & usb:/dev/usb/lp0

I used foo2xqx driver and followed the instructions exactly, downloaded p1005 with webget, hot plug was enabled, as well as make cups

what did I miss?

As i understood i need usblp for firmware autoupdate, but new CUPS doesn't detect printer with usblp turned on in kernel, so i have it turned off. So do i need to ignore thist detection and turn usblp and printer would be autoadded anyway/ should i downgrade CUPS/ should i keep usblp turned off and find anotherway(for manual firmware update)

I reinstalled completely as per web page(Not forgetting to donate this time), and everything is now seems fine, excep that usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 throws an error. These are c devices with major 189, or 253 if there's a string after the number. Minor numbers go from 0 to 640 in no perceptible pattern :-o. I'm guessing the 189s are hubs, the others are ports. Is /sys taking over?

Last action i performed was: $ sudo make cups
the previous step of: $ sudo gnome-cups-manager didn't work.
sudo: gnome-cups-manager: command not found

When I send a print job, it is placed in the queue but never actions.

Can anyone guide me down the right path?

Hi,

I am not sure this is the right forum since it seems to be a somewhat more general problem.
I have followed all steps and installed the driver on Fedora Core 8.
I can print from Linux and Windows clients.
The problem is after each windows print my windows printers shows status as processing and number of jobs as 1.
I can print again and each job prints fine but still job count shows as 1 and still status is stuck at 1.

I have set up a HP P1005 under Slackware-12.2 and Slamd64-12.2 on 2 separate boxes. Slamd64 is a 64 bit port of slack. For the record, the foo2zjs docs are excellent. Slackware & slamd64 use /etc/rc.d/rc.cups and http://localhost:631 for configuring a printer. It offers kde, not gnome; it also has xfce as a 'low cholesterol window manager' and my personal choice.

This printer replaces my Epson Stylus C70, and works this way: I can turn on, rapidly download the firmware, the cat >/dev/usb/lp0 >/dev/usb/lp0 (a very simple instruction is erratic). If the firmware goes down (orange light for a few secs) it prints.

After any length of standby, /dev/usb/lp0 vanishes. Here's the transaction in dmesg

I have no clue why /dev/usb/lp0 is gone and hoped you might know why, if not where. usblp.ko is still loaded. This occurs on 32 bit and 64 bit boxes, and never occurred with the Epson, so I conclude it's printer related. Printing is disabled, of course, and cups jobs vanish I then get

/dev/usb/lp0: No such device in the logs

kernel versions are 2.6.21.5 & 2.6.29.1 hplip never heard of slackware, and bombs out. I tried it before I found foozjs on the 64 bit machine, and it's firmware.py is sometimes the only way to get firmware down to the printer.
The word 'sometimes' is most un-linux like, but this is the situation.

Finally a newbie question: When the P1005 throws an error (e.g. out of paper), and sits there with the orange light on, what's the recovery procedure.

Hi, I've installed your driver and everything works fine, except when I print multiple copies from Gimp. This is Ubuntu 8.10, Gimp 2.6.1

When I print 3 copies I get 2 blank pages and the third one is correctly printed.

Hi,

i use the P1005 with a dsl gateway AVM Fritzbox 3270 as a network printer.
The fritzbox simply transfers all data coming in at port 9100
to the printer. Therefore the usb hotplug coming with the printer
driver does not help, because no usb hotplug event is happening at
my laptop.

This results in the usual behaviour, i.e. with no firmware the
printer will just receive the printjob and do nothing.

I figured out how to download the firmware manually via the fritzbox
to the printer with this command:

cat /usr/share/foo2xqx/firmware/sihpP1005.dl | netcat -w 1 fritz.box 9100

This allows me to use the P1005 as network printer but it comes with
the drawback that I must not forget to download the firmware before
I print. The firmware is the one which is generated during the
driver build.

1) I installed the driver following the instructions in the file included in the tar file. 2) I also created a new printer with CUPS 3) I tried a test print, but it was not readable.

I have also hplip installed.

Firstly pkg_add foo2zjs. Bat later saw the notice and pkg_delete, aftr that made by instructions for foo2xqx. Via cups web added new printer (it was discovered on /dev/ulpt0). Send test page, it bahaves like is printing, but printer keeps being silent and prints nothing. So I try to manually upload fw to it. After what in dmesg I see "ulpt0 offline", switch off/on, "blabla ulpt0 on uhub0 bidirectional". Again I try to uload fw, it goes "offline" again and nothing is printing. Moreover, I noticed, that usb_printerid is not compiling by error, so I even can't get printer id to chek, if everything is ok.

Could anyone advice me something on this (except reading cups logs).

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 but am unable to get my HP P1005 printer to work. The printer works with my mac, so no hardware related problems.

I followed the instructions and to be sure I did:
make uninstall
make
./getweb P1005
make install
make install-hotplug
make cups

$ lsusb says:

Hi, I am using debian sid
I followed the instruction in the install closely but the printer won't print: it gets viewed by the system and the drivers show up in the cups configuration webpage, but it won't print anything. The jobs get processed but nothing gets printed on the page.
Any idea what could cause this problem?

P1005 with an Openwrt box [solved; corrupted file] (4 replies)

Hi,

I'm trying to run a HP Laserjet P1005 with p910nd printserver on an Asus WL-500g with openwrt. I successfully did that with a Laserjet 1020 on the same machine before.

I'm using the hotplugd to transmitt the firmware to the printer, but that doesn't seem to work. My script tries to write the firmware with "cat $P1005FIRMWARE > /dev/usb/lp0" but that doesn't seem to work.

When using ./usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 from http://oleg.wl500g.info/hplj/ I get:

GET_DEVICE_ID string:
MFG:Hewlett-Packard;MDL:HP LaserJet P1005;CMD:ACL;CLS:PRINTER;DES:HP LaserJet P1005;

So it seems, that the firmware isn't transmitted successfully. It did work before with the 1020 printer, so I thought it should with the P1005.

Can you help me?

Hi, I just wanted to contribute something I have found out.

I am using a P1005 on Ubuntu Hardy. I have installed the drivers following the instructions and it worked. Every time I printed something the print job would come out fine, but I would receive an error with the very descriptive name "other" and the job would not clear from the list. I had to manually get rid of it.

This behaviour stopped when I replaced the toner cartridge. It seems that the printer was trying to tell the system that the toner was low but the driver did not understand the message so it threw an error.

As I said, the problem is now fixed. It may reappear once the toner goes down again, but that will take some time :-)

I hope this information will be useful.
