I have this running all the time on my home server. I configured it like this:

Open the crontab like so:
crontab -e

Enter the following (modify it for your needs):
@reboot /usr/sbin/dell-1600n-net-scan.pl --listen 192.168.1.20 --clx2160n --multi-session --scan-dir /files/scans

Press ctrl+x, then y

That's it! It will run persistently in the background and always be ready. I tried that with Ubuntu 7.10. So far, I can print in monochrome. If I switch to color, it doesn't print.
