I had this foo2hp printer working until I upgraded my HD and the printing doesn't work anymore. At least I think that's when it stopped working. Anyhow, foo2hp isn't in the driver list anymore. Went to try to reinstall it, (I'm not very familiar with the terminal BTW) When I went to do the CPPFLAGS thing in terminal, I got this error:

Nicholas-Macbook:foomatic-filters-4.0.4 nicholas$ CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/local/include" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/local/lib" ./configure --prefix=/usr
and googling I learned to "remake" the database somehow, and then did this technique:

Nicholas-Macbook:~ nicholas$ locate bin/gcc

and got this:

/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.0
/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2
/usr/X11/bin/gccmakedep
/usr/share/TargetConfigs/bin/gcc

but when I do this:

Nicholas-Macbook:~ nicholas$ CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/local/include" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/local/lib" ./configure --prefix=/usr

I get this:

-bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

Am I barking up the wrong tree? Which tree should I bark up?

So my 1600 has been set up and printing fine from my OSX laptop to the shared HP 1600 on my XP machine for six months now.

I want to get rid of the XP machine, so I purchased an airport express to act as the print server. My laptop can see the printer no problem, but when I try to install it (using System Preferences or CUPS), the HP color laserjet 1600 foomatic/foo2hp driver is NOT among the driver choices. The strange thing is that both my current B&W and Color printers set up and working over the XP machine state that this is the driver being used.

To throw a wrench in, I must confess I had a prior version of the foomatic driver installed before adding the updated color version six months ago. I didn't uninstall the prior ones, and they had the same name, but I got everything working anyway as long as I found the correct one of the two. When I set this up six months ago I was forced to guess which driver was the new updated one because they both had the same name. So there used to be two drivers with this name in the list, but now there are none.

I downloaded and installed all the driver for the HP Laser Jet 1600 but it will only print in B&W or 2 bit color. When I set it to 1 bit color it is sent to the printer but does not print at all. Not even a blank page. Also, when I print in 2 bit colour at the bottom of the page it leaves a .5 inch gap. It should print to .25 of an inch. It will print to .25" in B&W but not with the 2 bit colour.

In short:
#1. Wont print in 1 bit colour
#2. Wont print to .25" from edge of paper in colour but will in B&W

Hi, i have got a Laserjet 1600 so i can do tests on it.
As said on the website, 2bpp is not tuned.
I found why :
in the current code, 2bpp is done as cups do, with 4 values :
00 : no ink
01 : little ink
10 : middle ink
11 : full ink

But HP Laserjet 1600 works with 3 values :
00 : no ink
01 : half ink
10 : full ink

11 has no mean, because that's an half AND full ink spot, so it prints the same as 10

I hope this can help for future.

How to tell which driver is being used, or change it (1 reply)

Hi.

This is my first post on such a forum as this, and I am confused about lots of stuff in Linux, though I have been working with Ubuntu (mostly gutsy Gibbon 7.10) for a couple years on and off.

The problem I have right now is not so much that I think anything is broken, but I just can't tell if my system is actually using the foo2zjs driver I downloaded from

http://foo2hp.rkkda.com/

which think I installed according to the instructions.

The reason I wonder is mainly that when I look at the printer configuration, it says it is using the foo2hp (recommended) driver, and I think it should say foo2hp (without the recommended).

So please tell me:

1. How do I tell what driver is actually being used when I print to my LJ1600?

2. If my system is not using the foo2hp driver I just installed, how do I switch it to that one?

NOTE: The instruction to run gnome-cups-manager does not work, and the screen shots at

http://foo2hp.rkkda.com/ubuntu/

bear little resemblance to the screens I get in 7.10. Specifically, there is no "Install driver" option. Instead I choose from the main menu System >> Administration >> Printing. I get a window called "Printer configuration - localhost" with several tabs, one of which has some of the things you tell me to choose, i..e. Color Mode: Color and Bits Per Plane: 1.

On that same tab is a heading called Adjustment, which has only one item, ICM Color Profile, and one of the entries in its drop-list is file ICCFactory 1 which I seem to recall reading about but now cannot find.

Anyway, in an effort to tell this print queue to use the foo2hp driver I just installed, I choose the Settings tab, and on it under Make and Model (which always shows HP Color LaserJet 1600 Foomatic/foo2hp (recommended) no matter what I do) I choose "Change" which takes me to a Change Driver window where I select "Provide PPD File" and tell it to use

/etc/cups/ppd/HP_Color_LaserJet_1600.ppd

which must be the one I just installed because it has the date/time of when I did the sudo make install.

But, as you know, there are no instructions to do what I did, and I can't tell if it makes any difference anyway.

Please help un-confuse me.

Thanks for any help.

I'm trying to print PDF files using GNOME Evince Document Viewer 2.20, CUPS 1.3.4 and foo2hp2600 (svn) driver. However I can't.

I don't think this is related with Evince and Cups because Evince creates .ps output of PDFs using "Print to file" function. And I can print other documents like photos with gutenprint, or from gedit, OpenOffice.org etc.

When it comes to PDF, created .ps file does not work with foo2hp2600-wrapper script. I try the following happens;
$ foo2hp2600-wrapper pdf_output.ps > output.zfs
Not a pbm file!

I have no idea which part of the script prints this but that looks like the cause of problem. Cups last message from printer is "Sent 72 bytes" for any byte long PDF file.

I want to further debug the issue, but I don't know where to start. I can mail the .ps file to those interested.

Hi!

Does anyone know what happens to the LJ1600/LJ2600 if you ask it to print
C = 1, M = 1, Y = 1 AND K = 1 at the same time? Will the engine handle this?
foo2hp doesn't mind me doing so, so I placed '1 1 1 1 setcmykcolor' PostScript commands in my print file, and the zjsdecode shows that foo2hp indeed does
SOMETHING to all four planes.

I haven't bought a 1600/2600 printer yet, so I can't test it. And most stores won't let me try their printers, and HP's pre-sales haven't answered me at all.

I just want to create a thick layer of toner, regardless of its color.
And by having the engine print all four on top of each other will (?) do just that.

For what reason, you may wonder? To produce printed circuit boards!
Either with toner transfer (aka Gootee method, my preferred choice), or the "traditional" photographic method with UV light exposure and sodium hydroxide developer.

Hi - found this site and installed my hp color laserjet 1600 as described in the install-file.
It prints clear & sharp text, but rubbish images ... colorless, without resolution and with blurred parts.
I shared the printer, and connecting from a windows-box via http://...:631/printers/Color.... it is printing very well.
I noticed the default "monochrome" setting, which was easy to replace; I also noticed the 1600 having no "resolution" entry in the ppd?
Rick, you showed an image as "prints well" in some other post, but this image also does not print well on my box.
Any clues?

I had color printing working fine on my HP1600 on OS X with a prior version of CUPS (the default version that comes with OS X v10.4.10). I then upgraded to CUPS 1.2.11 and am now having color printing problems. In some applications (ie Camino), when I select 2 bpp color printing from the file->print->printer features dialog, I get a "No %%BoundingBox: comment in header" error and nothing prints. When I select 1 bpp printing, I get printouts, but the colors are now extremely washed out.

In other applications (ie Preview), when I select 2bpp color printing, the print job shows up in the queue for a little while, but then disappears without warning, and nothing prints. Looking in the foo2hp.crash.log, I see:

Printing to the 1600, the default colour profile, to be frank, is rubbish. The colours are off, and the system appears to have defaulted to dithering, or some such technique, which means that there are diagonal lines across all of the prints.

The text quality is fantastic, its just the colour that's off. Is there any way to improve it? Do we need to purchase a custom colour profile? If so, would it be possible to buy a generic-style one, in order that it can be put back into the system for all to use?

(Speaking as someone who hasn't the first clue about colour profiles etc, and is a relative Linux Newbie.)

Just for contrast, we've attached the printer to our shared office windows machine. The prints come out looking just fine, and the colour hue's are brilliant.

Of course.. it may be a problem with our setup.. But I've tried it on a Red-Hat based system, and a Ubuntu system :S

Hi,

I just purchased and set up a new HP Color Laserjet 1600. Everything went smoothly, and I asked GNOME Cups Manager to print a test page. My disappointment was huge when it was all black and white. I purchased this printer to replace and old monochrome Brother laser, and gnomeprinting indicated that it would work on Linux.

I'm running Ubuntu 6.10, and have tried various options without success.

Is there anyone who's been able to print in color from Linux on a 1600, and could offer some tips?

Thanks,
