I decided to migrate from Fedora 15 to 17. Foo2zjs worked pretty well on F15 but it will no longer be supported soon. I installed Foo2zjs for my HP1020 today hoping to get the same smooth performance. Everything seems to work except when I switch the printer off and on ... firmware is not uploaded to the device

manually uploading it works well.
(cat /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1020.dl > /dev/usb/lp0) ... worked

What now? This machine is more or less a remote machine ... walking through the corridors of the office to run the above command doesn't make sense. (Unless, of course, I have to use ssh ... but I'd prefer a normal 'on and off' workability)

Your advice?

Poor print quality with Well Tempered Screens or ICM (1 reply)

Hi.

I'm using a Magicolor 2200DL. I happen to be on Ubuntu 11.04,
and have installed per the instructions given on the foo2zjs
site. Additionally, I have installed ghostscript 8.71 as
/usr/bin/gs.foo. Without this, using gs 9.01, the printer
produces only gibberish, or never outputs a page.

I use an ICM file I created for my printer, and this is installed
as user1.icm. I should note that the provided Magicolor 2200 ICM
color profile is vastly incorrect for my printer. Mine works
well for me.

My issue now is with regards to Color Modes and Halftone
algorithms. I have been set to "Color - use ICM profile",
and "Well Tempered Screens (best)". My understanding of the
foo2zjs website and documentation suggests that this would be the
best setting. I find that the print quality is terrible. The
background of colored lineart is scattered with colored dots, and
the line edges are very fuzzy. To me, it's like I applied very
low-rate JPEG compression to all images. Even solid-black images
demonstrate a moire pattern.

I've had better luck with "Accurate Screens (better)". This reduces
the amount of "background" printed behind lineart images--but does not
entirely eliminate it.

A larger improvement, particularly on being able to produce solid
black images, results from using the color mode "Color - Graphics and
Text". This results in a smooth, black image.

Before I begin attaching photographs of the printout, can anyone shed
light on this behavior? Are these known bugs?

What are the "right" print settings?

Thanks.

I've been using the foo2zjs drivers successfully with the HP 1020 since roundabout Kubuntu 7.04, now I've hit a snag with 12.04.

Kubuntu 12.04 downloads *something* to the printer quite early in the device driver chain, which stops the printer driver (or anything else) from communicating with it. As a result, the foo2zjs firmware can't be downloaded (I assume). I first found this with a brand new install, then with an upgrade install from 11.10 (64-bit in both cases). From the 11.10 install, the printer worked fine, but as soon as 12.04 was active (and the printer reset) no comms.

On the same machine I have an 11.10 (32-bit) partition. If I first boot into that, reset the printer, the correct firmware is downloaded. If I then reboot into 12.04, without switching the printer off, 12.04's broken firmware is not downloaded and I can use the printer.

I've tried uninstalling the hplip software/drivers, but that doesn't seem to help.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for this software! Printing with foo2zjs on my HP 1102w under Linux works like a charm. I had been using hplip, which after a couple of library updates stopped working and instead produced permanent backend crashes. After removing it and installing foo2zjs I could immediately print again. This made my day!

Just one suggestion: It would be convenient if the tarball name was decorated with some kind of version number. This would make it easier to keep track of the different versions.

I've got a Samsung CLP-310 printer that used to work just fine on my last system (Kubuntu 9). Recently, I've purchased a new computer with a pre-installed Lubuntu 11.10. There was no standard driver for this printer available anymore, so I downloaded foo2qpdl and followed the instructions on the website.

After that, I started the system's printer configuration tool. For the driver, I selected the file "Samsung-CLP-310.ppd.gz". When now I try to apply the driver, CUPS aborts with a "server-error-internal-error" (no more information given).

Can anyone tell me how to solve this resp. how to diagnose the problem further?

Thanks in advance,
I am running Fedora Core 16 (3.2.7-1.fc16.x86_64) on an HP ProBook 4530s. The system is completely up to date. This problem led me to doing a complete update.

We have an HP Laserjet 1020 shared on a Windows XP machine in our office.

I followed the instructions for installing foo2zjs and the printer is working fine when printing documents in portrait, but when trying to print landscape it seems that the document is not "rotated" on the paper. I.E. It prints the document as if the paper feed is landscape even though it is fed portrait. (I hope this makes sense)

I have also tried to connect the printer via USB to my PC and it has the same effect.

Anny assistance will be appreciated.

In former versions tis worked fine with my DL5430 printer.
In this case however, the saturation values are much to highso the color whell in the testprint is nearly black in the middle, and the gray ramp is almost brown at the "white" end.
I have tried all available color profiles.
Any ideas how to configure this?

Hi,

I've installed manually (from the website) foo2zjs 2011_12_27 on openSUSE 12.1 x86_64, and test page works fine. Also in general, looks like normal printing works as well. Now today I had a longer pdf and wanted n-up printing (from okular, selecting 2 pages on a sheet), and it worked, but the result was corrupted.

Here is a good result:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QkYH7ICzsUk/TxBErGMeKWI/AAAAAAAAA9w/t7C6DuQiCs0/I/2012-01-13%25252015.50.09.jpg

Here is a bad one:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-QI4gw7aN0Jk/TxBEmuCNIII/AAAAAAAAA9o/GmKCfm97GXs/I/2012-01-13%25252015.49.49.jpg

As far as I see I can reproduce this with any PDF, but in case needed, I can share the test document as well.

Do you have any idea what may cause the problem? Originally psutils was not installed, I installed it, restarted cups, but the situation did not change.

Thanks!

Partially means: text prints fine (looks good, actually!) but graphics come out as crazy interference. Anyone have any clues how to fix that last problem?

Now that my LaserJet 1500 works on my Mac, I'd like to work on fine tuning.

Using the Testpage.ps, the 0.5 inch line is 1/16 inch from left of page and 1/32 inch from right of page. Top and bottom are OK.

Is there a way to "tune" that ?

Also, I got a hand on HP's .ICC file for the HP Color LaserJet 1500 (from HP's own driver). Could we get better colors using it ? The colors we have now are pretty good already.

Hi everyone,

I installed foo2oak on my Mac (OS X 10.6.8, Snow Leopard). I followed the instructions in the INSTALL and INSTALL.osx files, and everything seemed to work fine.

The only thing that didn't work first time is that I got a message telling me that it could not copy files in /usr/share/foomatic/db/source, so I created the directory and ran make, getweb 1500 and make install again.

The last step, create printers, is causing me problems. I trying to add the printer using Mac's Printer Setup Utility. It can "see" the printer, but the Foomatic/foo2oak driver for the HP Color LaserJet 1500 doesn't show in the list.

Any hints ?

Thanks,

Hi.
Please give me some help, on the foo2zjs installation.
My Operating System is: Redhat Enterprise Linux 4.7 x86-32bits

When i run the 'make' command, it does not finish because when the installation tries to run: cc -O2 -Wall -L/usr/local/lib command2foo2lava-pjl.o -lcups -o command2foo2lava-pjl. It gives me the error make: *** [command2foo2lava-pjl] Error 1.

Best Regards,
